Roof walkways

Kee Step® Roof Stepover Platforms

Stop your team climbing over pipework and calling it a route. A roof is rarely a clear walk: low-lying pipework, cable trays, ducting, drainage runs and rooftop plant equipment all cross the paths people need to use, and every obstacle invites a trip or an improvised climb. Stepover platforms turn each obstacle into a safe route. A Kee Step® roof step-over provides anti-slip steps up, a level platform across, and steps down the other side, with handrails the whole way.

Safe access over every rooftop obstacle

Stop your team climbing over pipework and calling it a route. A roof is rarely a clear walk: low-lying pipework, cable trays, ducting, drainage runs and rooftop plant equipment all cross the paths people need to use, and every obstacle invites a trip or an improvised climb. Stepover platforms turn each obstacle into a safe route. A Kee Step® roof step-over provides anti-slip steps up, a level platform across, and steps down the other side, with handrails the whole way. Kee Step step-overs are modular, built from galvanised steel, and configured to the height and width of whatever they need to cross, giving safe access on rooftops and in industrial environments indoors.

The value of step overs is that they fit the thing in their way, so awkward crossings are covered too, keeping safe access simple whatever the layout.

When to choose a stepover

A good fit when

  • Pipes, ducts or cable trays cross a route people use
  • People are climbing over plant to reach work areas
  • There is a change in roof level on the route
  • You need a crossing indoors at ground level

Three ways to install a step-over platform

How a roof step over meets the surface depends on the substrate and the work pattern: A Mantech surveyor confirms the right install mode and checks the roof sheet or deck can carry the loads. Roof penetration is only ever used where the structure and the work pattern genuinely call for it.

  • Fixed platforms use galvanised steel fittings bolted to the structural deck — the permanent choice for step overs used regularly on concrete or steel substrates.
  • Freestanding platforms use PVC counterweights — so there is no roof penetration and the roof membrane and its warranty stay intact. This suits membrane surfaces and metal profile roofs alike.
  • Mobile work platforms run on heavy-duty locking castors for tasks that move around — such as vehicle maintenance and temporary inspection routes.

Built for daily foot traffic

Every Kee Step step-over platform is designed for safe roof access in real conditions. Treads featuring anti-slip surfaces keep grip in wet weather, toe boards stop tools being kicked off the platform, and a double handrail comes as standard, with extra handrails, safety barriers and wider treads available for taller step overs. Hot-dip galvanising to BS EN ISO 1461 gives corrosion resistance for internal or external use, and lockable gates can restrict the crossing to authorised staff. The result meets stringent safety standards while staying simple to use every day.

How it works

From survey to handover

Book your survey
  1. 01 · SURVEY

    Free

    Measured to the obstacle

A surveyor measures the pipework, duct or plant that blocks the route, along with the clearances either side, and confirms whether a standard kit fits or the unit has to be bespoke.

  2. 02 · QUOTE

    Fixed price

A fixed price for the crossing

The measurements decide the platform height, tread width and handrail configuration, so the quotation is for the crossing you need rather than a nearest standard size.

  3. 03 · INSTALL

    No hot work

    Delivered pre-assembled

Standard kits arrive pre-assembled for rapid installation. Bespoke units are fabricated to the survey and fitted on the same visit wherever access allows.

  4. 04 · HANDOVER

    Audit-ready

    Certification and the paperwork

You receive the certification, the specification for the installed unit, a competent-person handover and the annual inspection date.

  • Sized to the obstacle

Mini up to 400mm, standard 600 to 1400mm, and bespoke units above that.

  • Three ways to fix

Freestanding on counterweights, bolted to the deck, or mobile on locking castors.

  • Installed in hours

Off-the-shelf kits arrive pre-assembled and go in with standard hand tools.

Off-the-shelf step-overs or bespoke units

Standard kits are available off the shelf for the most common obstacle sizes, delivered pre-assembled in kit form for easy installation and rapid access. Where the roof needs something specific, perhaps a wider step over platform for heavier foot traffic, a double handrail, or a long span between two obstacles, our safety experts design bespoke safe access solutions to the project requirements. Off-the-shelf step overs arrive fast and install the same day, while bespoke step platforms fit the individual rooftop surface exactly. We advise on the right route when we run a site survey.

Step-overs and walkways working together

A step-over crosses a single obstacle. When the challenge is the whole route, a Kee Walk® roof walkway provides a defined anti-slip path from the access point to the work area, compliant with EN 516:2006. Most roofs use walkways and step overs together. The walkway runs the route, and roof step overs drop in wherever the route meets pipework or plant equipment, so workers keep safe access under their feet from start to finish. Mantech scopes everything in one survey and specifies one integrated safe access solution.

Inspection & recertification

Inspected and kept certified

Step-overs must be inspected at least every 12 months by a competent person under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, with a quick pre-use check before each crossing. Mantech runs scheduled inspections of step-overs, walkways and roof access equipment, booking the next visit during the current one.

What is a roof step-over platform?

A roof step over platform is a short crossing structure that lets workers step safely up and over rooftop obstructions such as pipes, cable trays, ducting and changes in level. It combines steps, a level platform and handrails, removing trip hazards and giving safe access over the obstruction while protecting the services being crossed. Kee Step stepover platforms are engineered to BS EN ISO 14122 Part 3 and CE marked.

What height obstacles can Kee Step step-overs cross?

The standard step over platform crosses obstacles from 600mm to 1400mm, and the mini version covers obstacles up to 400mm. Above 1400mm, bespoke units are built from the same modular components to suit the project requirements.

Do stepover platforms require roof penetration?

Only the fixed version, which bolts to the structural deck. Freestanding step overs use PVC counterweights and require no roof penetration at all, making them the standard choice on membrane roofs where the warranty matters. Mobile platforms sit on locking castors and touch the roof surfaces only through their wheels.

What safety standards do step-overs meet?

Kee Step is designed to BS EN ISO 14122 Part 3, the standard covering stairways, platforms and handrails for access, and is CE marked, with hot-dip galvanising to BS EN ISO 1461. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require design, installation and inspection by a competent person, and Mantech provides all three as part of the safety solution.

Can step-over platforms be used indoors?

Yes. The same galvanised steel step over platform designs give safe access in industrial settings such as warehouse floors, factory walkways and plant rooms, crossing low-lying pipework and cable runs at ground level. The mobile version is popular indoors because it moves between tasks.

How quickly can step-overs be installed?

Off-the-shelf kits arrive pre-assembled, and typical step overs are installed within a few hours using standard hand tools. There is no welding and no specialist plant, and the platform is ready for foot traffic the same day.

What options can be added to a step-over?

Extra handrails, safety barriers, bespoke tread widths and lockable gates are all available, and toe boards are fitted as standard. The surveyor confirms the specification during design so each step over platform matches how the route is actually used.

How often should step-overs be inspected?

At least every 12 months by a competent person under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, with a quick pre-use check before each crossing. Mantech runs scheduled inspections of step overs, walkways and roof access equipment through our inspection service.
