FAQs

Questions about narrow-space guardrail

How the narrow-space system differs, what holds it in place, and what keeps it certified.

How is this different from a standard freestanding guardrail?

A standard Kee Guard® system uses counterweights offset behind the rail. The narrow-space version uses a compact, counterbalanced base that sits under the rail line, so it takes up far less of the walkway and removes a trip hazard.

Does it need fixing to the roof?

No. It's freestanding and counterbalanced, with no drilling or welding, so the roof membrane stays intact.

Can it be used for temporary works?

Yes. The system suits both temporary and permanent installations on roofs up to a 10-degree pitch, so it can protect a solar install or plant replacement and stay as permanent protection afterwards.

What stops the guardrail moving?

The counterbalanced base resists wind and impact loads, and open-ended runs finish with returns that reduce movement. Every scheme is checked with a BS 13700:2021 wind-load calculation for your site.

How often should it be inspected?

Annually by a competent person, covering the rails, bases and overall condition, with records kept. Mantech runs scheduled inspections through our inspection service.
